Awakening the Inner Fire – A Journey Through the Chakras, with a Focus on the Solar Plexus

Recently, I found myself with the rare gift of time and space—time to sit, breathe, and really observe a painting I’ve seen many variations of over the years. This version below I found ina book in the library of the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in India. It was one of those traditional illustrations of the chakras, the seven energy centers aligned along our spine. I had glanced at these images many times, in yoga studios, books, and even in my travels. But this time, something shifted. As I looked closely, something clicked. Suddenly, the symbols, colors, and positions began to tell a story—a story that felt personal and alive.

I understood the underlying connections in a deeper way, and I want to share this insight with you—not in a technical or mystical way, but as a gentle invitation to explore your own energy body. My intention is to make this wisdom feel more accessible, especially if chakras have always seemed a bit abstract or distant to you.

Let’s start simply: the chakras can be seen as centers of energy within us. They are not physical in the way organs are, but many traditions—especially those from Tantra—believe they connect body, mind, and spirit. Each chakra corresponds to certain emotional, psychological, and even physical aspects of our lives.

Today, I want to shine a light on one chakra in particular—the Manipura chakra, also known as the solar plexus chakra.

Why Manipura?

Because this is the place where so many of us hold tension, self-doubt, and unexpressed power. Manipura, which means “City of Jewels,” is located at the solar plexus—just above the navel. It is traditionally represented by a bright yellow lotus with ten petals, associated with the element of fire. This is the seat of our willpower, our confidence, our inner fire.

When this chakra is out of balance, we might feel stuck, indecisive, anxious, or overly controlling. But when it flows freely, we stand in our strength, speak our truth, and move forward with clarity and purpose.

How Can We Support Our Manipura Chakra?

Here are a few gentle practices that have helped me, and might help you too:

  1. Movement: Twists, core-strengthening yoga postures, or even dancing can awaken this center. Feel your power ripple from the center of your belly outward.

  2. Breathing: Try “breath of fire” or simply place your hands on your belly and breathe deeply into your solar plexus. Let it expand with courage and clarity.

  3. Fire rituals: Light a candle and set an intention. Fire is the element of this chakra—let it remind you of your ability to transform.

  4. Affirmations: Speak or write affirmations such as “I stand in my power,” “I am confident and capable,” or “I honor my inner fire.”

  5. Awareness: Simply start noticing how you feel around your solar plexus area during the day. Do you contract? Do you brace? Bring breath and softness to those moments.

A Loving Reminder

There’s no need to “perfect” your chakras. They are not a checklist to complete—they are part of a living, breathing system that reflects your journey. Some days your energy will be high and fierce, other days soft and reflective. All of it is valid.

As I continue exploring this map of inner energy, I’ll share more insights on the other chakras—from the rootedness of the Muladhara to the thousand-petaled opening of the Sahasrara. But for now, I invite you to befriend your Manipura. Feel into your center. And trust that the light you seek is already burning within you.
